Subdomains and Custom Domains

Aviary Subdomains

By default, every Aviary organization is assigned a customizable subdomain (e.g. ).
Organization owners or administrators can view or edit an organization’s subdomain at any time following these steps:
Log into Aviary and expand the Organization tab in the Aviary admin menu.
Click the Profile link to open the Organization Profile page.
View the organization’s current subdomain in the Subdomain field.
Edit the Subdomain field as necessary. Then click the Update Profile button at the bottom of the page to save the changes.

Note: Editing the subdomain will affect any links formatted with the previous subdomain that have been shared or displayed outside of Aviary. Those links will need to be updated with the new subdomain to continue working.

Custom Domains

If an organization would like to use a custom URL for their Aviary site instead of an Aviary subdomain, it is possible to configure a custom domain and point it to the Aviary organization as a DNS alias.
The process of configuring a custom domain for an Aviary organization includes two parts. The organization will need to complete the first part, and then Aviary will complete the second.

1. Organizations will complete these steps to configure the custom domain:

Register the custom domain with your preferred DNS provider.
After registering the custom domain, create a CNAME record with your DNS provider that points from the custom domain to the Aviary organization’s subdomain.
Log into Aviary and open the Organization tab in the Aviary admin menu.
Click the Profile link to open the Organization Profile page.
Confirm and keep the organization’s current subdomain in the Subdomain field.
Enter the URL for the new custom domain in the Custom domain (DNS alias) field.

Click the Update Profile button at the bottom of the page to save the new custom domain for your organization.
Contact to provide details about configuring the custom domain.

2. Aviary will complete these steps to finish configuring the custom domain:

Aviary will check if the custom domain is configured correctly to point users from the custom domain to the Aviary organization’s subdomain.
Aviary will generate an SSL certificate for the custom domain.
Aviary will update information about the custom domain in our database.
After completing these steps, the custom domain will be active in Aviary. Aviary will notify the organization that the configuration is complete.
